Why Emergency Management?

Emergency management professionals play a crucial role in overseeing the planning and preparation needed for communities to function and survive during the most chaotic and dangerous times.

Kent County has a unique opportunity available for a Training and Exercise Coordinator. The T/E Coordinator is responsible for the overall coordination of an emergency management related training and exercise program. The position is responsible for T/E development, delivery/execution, and evaluation of T/E events. The coordinator also provides logistical support such as hosting planning meetings, making promotional materials, promoting, securing training locations, registrations, arranging for catering (as appropriate), and coordinating anti-terrorism-related training and exercise efforts identified under grants undertaken by the county.
The following are some of the key functions of this position:

  • Develop and maintain an atmosphere of emergency preparedness, encouraging confidence in response capabilities and plans.
  • Select and use materials, methods, and processes that strengthen the implementation of disaster recovery programs for the County of Kent and local subunits of government.
  • Coordinate mandated state and federal training in the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
  • Respond to the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) as needed/assigned by the EMC and primarily serves as the ESF-7 Resource Management Coordinator (RMC). Other potential assignments include work as a Logistics Section worker, Planning Section worker, or as a member of an Incident Management Team to support the Command Team in the field. These duties will be dependent upon the training credentials and experience obtained by the incumbent.
  • Prior to an emergency, assist with operations, development, and maintenance of the Emergency Operations Center, from which emergency operations are directed and controlled.
  • Represent the County, Sheriff’s Office, and community in a positive manner.

Minimum Qualifications

Associates degree in any field, from an accredited college; Two years of professional work experience in a relevant field.  Emergency management, communications, or education preferred.

Possession of a valid, unrestricted Michigan driver’s license.

Ability to safely operate a vehicle in a variety of situations and weather conditions.
 
Ability to behave objectively and rationally in situations involving the risk of personal injury or loss of life.

Must have the strong ability to work independently with little direct supervision and demonstrate skills favorable to communication and instruction.

Ability to speak comfortably in public and in front of diverse groups, provide excellent customer service and educate adults in seminar environments.  Speaking engagements could range from audiences of just a few individuals to several hundreds or thousands of attendees.  This may also include speaking to the media for broadcast out to the community at large.

Must have the ability to operate and facilitate emergency management operations, as a general staff member.  Must maintain current training and knowledge of multi-hazard emergency response and preparedness with the incident command system/NIMS.

Should complete the Michigan Professional Emergency Management Program curriculum within four years after appointment.
